Vazgen Karapetyan –Program Coordinator at Eurasia Foundation claims that Metsamor nuclear plant would be a collabaration issue between Turkey and Armenia.
I had Mr. Karapetyan’s comments for my story about Turkey’s nuclear diplomacy. Here is the full text of Mr. Karapetyan’s comments about Metsamor: “My personal opinion is that none of the Turkish ministers is in a position to demand anything from the Armenian Government (and vice versa) as far as there are no diplomatic relations between the two countries. Also, Turkey is planning to build its own nuclear power plant in the nearest future, which the neighbors of Turkey might be not happy about. As far as I know, Greece has already protested Turkey’s plans to build a nuclear power plant, which, to me, will have no serious consequences. I don’t see the Metsamor power plant as a discussion point between Armenia and Turkey until diplomatic relations between the two countries are established. I do believe that as soon as diplomatic relations are established, Metsamor (and the plans to build a new nuclear power plant in Armenia in the nearest future) will become a point of collaboration not confrontation between Armenia and Turkey.
